COUNTEROFFERS: Thanks, but No Thanks!
[/fusion_text][fusion_text]
You’ve just accepted a new position and now have the dreaded task of resigning. You wonder how will your boss take it? Will your manager call HR and have them to escort you to your car not allowing you to work out your generous two-week notice? Will your manager lavish you with compliments and assure you that the company depends on you for it to be successful and without you it will all “go to pot” inflicting so much guilt that it just seems easier to stay than leave for that golden opportunity that you’ve been waiting for? Or will your manager further lavish you with compliments and offer you a “Counteroffer”? Please…. go hold a puppy because that warm fuzzy feeling will last no more than a week! My suggestion is to say “Thank You” but “No Thank You”.
Don’t be fooled into thinking you are worth more today than you were yesterday. You’ve just upset the apple cart and now your manager has one more thing to do on their list…. replace you, and that my friend takes time. We know this because this is the business we’re in.
On the flip side of the coin, the company that you accepted an offer with and then declined for a counteroffer will remember you for a long time. Time and emotion was involved during the process and later in your career you may find that you need to make a change, and well you know what they say about it being a small world. No matter how good your intentions are, when you accept a counteroffer, you jeopardize the trust of not just one company but two.
“Nothing personal, it’s just business and sometimes that stings.”
Moving forward, now that your manager had to make you a counteroffer for you to stay with the company, you can be sure his expectations of you have grown. Think about it…. now that he is paying you more, don’t you think he wants more for his buck? The answer is yes and you must prove yourself over as if you were a new employee. Plus, it’s not unheard of for a company to extend a counteroffer only to let the employee go a few months down the road.
Yearend evaluations are noteworthy. If you’re a valued employee, the expectation is to get a raise and potential promotion. Since your company had to bump your salary to retain your employment, they are not going to be in the mindset of increasing your salary twice. Depending on the counteroffer, you may have limited yourself in salary for a good while.
As a manager, I’ve always felt that if you must make a counteroffer to an employee for them to stay on board, it’s only human nature to be on the lookout for their replacement. This doesn’t even have to be a conscientious effort. After all, they wanted to leave once. Bottom line, companies have to look out for what’s in the best interest of the entire company. Nothing personal, it’s just business and sometimes that stings.
There are some companies that have policies that restricts counteroffers suggesting that it sends the wrong message to other employees. Studies have shown time and time again that employees who wish to depart from their current employer leave for other reasons besides money, so for the most part counteroffers are only a temporary fix. Research suggests that managers who offer counteroffers are only postponing the inevitable. Employees that accept counteroffers usually end up leaving within twelve to eighteen months.

WE HAVE SEEN HOW THEY PLAY OUT:
[/fusion_text][fusion_text]
Here’s our advice, the next time you are fortunate enough to receive an offer, sit down and really do some soul searching. Have you objectively evaluated your current position? Have you taken all the necessary steps on your end to make your current situation acceptable? When you can answer yes to those questions and continue to feel motivated to make a move then it’s time to take your next step. Unless, you’re being paid unfairly per your market and experience, we never suggest accepting another job simply to gain a few dollars. You must look at the whole picture. Ask yourself if the present opportunity represents upward mobility, are the benefits better, is there room for growth, what about work/family balance. The positives must outweigh the negatives. If the positives outweigh the negatives, then you have your answer. Write your letter of resignation and verbally express your appreciation for the time you’ve had with the company and you are firm in your decision.
Look forward not backwards, and maintain your integrity. It’s really all we have in this world.

Most professionals know the basics of interviewing, so I won’t bore you with the usual; arrive on time, make eye contact, sit up straight, etc. With that being said, I would like to make a few suggestions. My school of thought is “better to be prepared than surprised”…
