BEFORE AND DURING THE INTERVIEW

Most professionals know the basics of interviewing, so I won’t bore you with the usual; arrive on time, make eye contact, sit up straight, etc. With that being said, I would like to make a few suggestions. My school of thought is “better to be prepared than surprised”.

Why the dread of going on an interview?

I would say it’s because every word and every move is being evaluated from the receptionist to the hiring manager(s). This evaluation begins from the moment you walk through the door to the moment you walk out the door. If you don’t believe it…. think again. Your demeanor and attitude can make or break the interview. How you present yourself, and the power of kindness and a smile goes a long way.

The key, is to prepare yourself no matter how seasoned you may be. Knowledge and preparation are powerful and will give you the confidence you need to ace any interview.

Research the company beforehand and their quarterly/annual earnings.

Keep up with industry news. Google Alerts is great for keeping up with current events and company news.

Be prepared to give examples of how you’ve helped previous companies solve problems and how you believe you can integrate those ideas into solving others.

Think about how you have handled specific situations or circumstances. Maybe you’re working for a company that’s going through some growing pains or changes within their management structure.

Be prepared to discuss how you work on self-improvement. Do you attend workshops, seminars? What was the last book you read pertaining to your industry? What do you do to stay current in your prospective field?

Demonstrate self-confidence, but leave your ego at the door.

Express empathy as it shows maturity and vision. Focus on how you can help the company achieve their goals.

In this day of technology, we are so attached to our cell phones that it has become a part of our wardrobe, meaning we feel naked without it. However, before an interview or any kind of business meeting please make a conscience effort to turn off your cell phone.

Speaking of technology, please Google your name, and delete any images that could be a misrepresentation.

Lastly, be yourself and express enthusiasm, and always send thank you notes to each person who was part of the interview process including the person who greeted you or introduced you to the interviewing team.
